A petition which may consist of any number of separate instruments, shall be filed with the secretary of the district, signed by 20 percent or 500 electors residing within the area so proposed to be annexed.

Such petition shall set forth and describe the boundaries of the area proposed to be annexed and shall contain a prayer that such area be annexed to such district.
